Paid parental leave from 1 January 2011 - are you ready?

The Federal Government's Paid Parental Leave (GPPL) scheme recently passed parliament, and will apply to births or adoptions on or after 1 January 2011.
The scheme provides 18 weeks of government-funded paid parental leave to eligible working parents.
Employers may need to review their leave policies, payroll processes etc.

Super clearing house for small businesses

Eligible small businesses can now register to use the Australian Government's free Small Business Superannuation Clearing House.
The clearing house is a free service to small businesses with less than 20 employees to assist them in paying their employees' superannuation contributions and meet their superannuation guarantee obligations.
The clearing house service is optional and is administered by Medicare Australia.

The mantra behind key performance indicators (KPIs) is imprinted on the brain of every executive in the world: "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it". 

The trouble is many companies don't know what to measure. The result: bad management, mixed messages, confusion and employees focusing on the wrong thing.

KPIs need to be handled with care. Some companies use many KPIs, others have a handful. But they all need to use the right ones.

Draft paid parental leave legislation released

The government has released its draft Paid Parental Leave Bill 2010.

The proposed paid parental leave scheme will provide up to 18 weeks of government-funded parental leave pay at the national minimum wage (currently $543.78 per week). The scheme will provide for this leave to be taken in addition to any existing employer-funded entitlements, either at the same time or consecutively. The scheme will be available to parents of children born or adopted from 1 January 2011, who satisfy work, income and residency tests.
